Egyptian MPs called on President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to order the release of hundreds of innocent youths locked up in jails, saying that their detention harms the state.

Head of the parliament’s Human Rights committee, Alaa Abed, said: “Our youth did not find anyone to care about them. All of us must cooperate and work for their release by raising a parole request to the president in order to pardon them.”

The calls came during a meeting in parliament held to discuss the role of culture and why youths become “extremists”.

Supporting the call, members of parliament asked for a list of names to be prepared of those who had not joined “terrorist” organisations and did not carry out “terror” attacks against the state.

One MP warned that if innocent youths remain jailed for long periods they could become “terrorists” because they are “oppressed”.
