Cholera Outbreaks in Central and West Africa: 2017 Regional Update - Week 34 [EN/FR]

Nigeria: Le Nigeria connait une flambée de choléra qui s’est aggravée depuis la semaine 33 par l’apparition d’un foyer dans l’Etat de Borno. Au total à la semaine 34 le pays connait 7 foyers dont 3 très actifs (Borno, Kebbi et Kano) qui ont rapporté pendant les deux dernières semaines cumulativement 106 cas dont 05 décès. Ces trois foyers constituent une menace importante pour les autres pays du bassin du Lac Tchad, ainsi que pour le Golf de Guinée via le Benin. Les zones/régions transfrontalières les plus à risques sont , via l’Etat de Borno : Région de Diffa au Niger, l’Extrême Nord du Cameroun, Régions du Lac, Hadjer-Lamis et Ndjamena au Tchad; via l’Etat de Kebbi, Région de Dosso au Niger, et région de Kandi au Benin; via Kano, régions de Maradi et Zinder au Niger.

République Démocratique du Congo : La RDC , actuellement en flambée sur presque 80% de son territoire; les provinces transfrontalières le long du fleuve au Congo Brazzaville doivent être sous surveillance pour anticiper une éventuelle propagation comme cela a été le cas en 2016.

Niger, les acteurs de lutte contre le choléra outillés par la Plateforme régionale choléra

Dans le cadre de la préparation aux risques aux niveaux institutionnel & communautaire /Renforcement des capacités, sur financement d’ECHO, du 07 au 16 Août 2017, les Ministères de la Santé et de l’Hydraulique et de l’Assainissement du Niger ont organisé en collaboration avec la Plateforme régionale choléra, une formation en géolocalisation et analyse cartographique appliquée à la lutte contre le choléra en milieu urbain et péri-urbain. Cette formation a regroupé 62 cadres dont 33 cadres des services techniques étatiques, 23 des ONGs et 6 des institutions internationales provenant des 14 districts sanitaires hotspots choléra du Niger. La formation a permis à ces cadres de pouvoir : Collecter les données ; Produire des cartes thématiques facilitant la compréhension de la dynamique d’une épidémie; Interpréter les cartes et identifier les zones d’attention (clusters de cas) pour une réponse appropriée ; Orienter la réponse en fonction du contexte de transmission ; Et se familiariser avec les documents de lutte disponibles (stratégie bouclier/coup de poing, plan multisectoriel d’élimination du choléra du Niger, factsheets cholera du Niger, études pluridisciplinaires WASH-épidémiologie choléra, et la feuille de route de l’atelier transfrontalier des pays du bassin du lac Tchad (Douala Octobre 2016).

Nigeria : Nigeria is facing an outbreak of cholera which has worsened since week 33 in the State of Borno.At week 34, Borno, Kebbi and Kano states, which reported 106 cases, including 30 deaths, during the last two weeks are the three epicentres. These three outbreaks are significant threat to other countries in the Lake Chad Basin as well as to the Golf of Guinea via Benin. The most risky cross-border areas are, via the State of Borno: Diffa Region in Niger, Extreme Nord in Cameroon, Lac , Hadjer-Lamis and Ndjamena in Chad; via the State of Kebbi, Dosso Region in Niger, and Kandi region in Benin; via Kano, regions of Maradi and Zinder in Niger.

République Démocratique du Congo : DRC is currently facing a major cholera outbreak on almost 80% of its territory with around 24 000 cases incl 523 deaths. The cross-border provinces, all along the Congo river between the two countries must be under hight surveillance to anticipate a possible contamination.

Within the framework of risk preparedness at institutional and community level / Capacity building, with funding from ECHO, from 07 to 16 August 2017, the Ministries of Health and Water and Sanitation of Niger organized in collaboration with the Regional Cholera Platform, the training in geolocation and cartographic analysis applied to the fight against cholera in urban and peri-urban areas. This training gathered 62 executives including 33 executives from state technical services, 23 from NGOs and 6 from international institutions from Niger’s 14 health districts cholera hotspots. The training enabled these managers to: Collect data; Produce thematic maps to facilitate a cholera outbreak understanding; Interpret maps and identify attention areas (cases cluster) for an appropriate response; Orient the response according to the transmission context; And to familiarize themselves with the available fighting documents (shield / sword strategy, Niger’s cholera multi-sectoral elimination plan, Niger’s factsheets cholera, multidisciplinary studies WASH-cholera epidemiology, and the roadmap of the cross-border workshop of countries of the Lake Chad basin (Douala October 2016)).
