Lando Norris set the early pace in Free Practice 1 at the Japanese Grand Prix in a session where all eyes were on new Red Bull recruit, Yuki Tsunoda.
The McLaren driver topped the timesheet with a 1m 28.549s effort, which put him 0.163s clear of Mercedes' George Russell. After seeing both cars disqualified last time out in China, Ferrari showed strong pace with both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton inside the top four.

Red Bull had hoped that a shakeup in its driver line-up, replacing Liam Lawson with Tsunoda, would see the team run with two cars towards the front once more, and this was the case in the opening session, with Max Verstappen fifth and the Japanese driver only 0.107s further back in sixth.
Kimi Antonelli, Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz all explored the grass and gravel that line the Suzuka layout, but all kept clear of the close quarters walls.
