Iran has launched its first direct cargo flight to Russia less than a month after it signed into law a free trade deal with the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Local media reports said on Sunday that the cargo flight between Iran’s northern city of Rasht and the Russian capital Moscow began to operate a day earlier after a ceremony held in the Rasht Airport.
They described the launch of the cargo flight as a major step to implement the free trade deal between Iran and the EAEU.
They said that the development was also a sign of growing aviation cooperation between Iran and Russia.
Iran’s Atlas Air would use Antonov An-26 planes to carry up to six metric tons of cargo in each flight between Rasht and Moscow, the reports said, adding that the airline has been commissioned by the Anzali Free Zone Organization, located in the province of Gilan where Rasht is the provincial capital, to send export shipments from Gilan and other northern Iranian provinces to Russia.
Atlas Air said it was ready to expand cargo flights from Rasht to other destinations in the EAEU countries.
On March 3, the Iranian parliament approved the free trade deal between Iran and the EAEU, allowing the government to implement the agreement that had been signed in late 2023.
The law allows Iran to enjoy tariff-free exports on nearly 87 percent of its trade with members of the EAEU, namely Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia.
Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization said at the time that the country would start implementing the free trade deal with the EAEU within two months, adding that the deal would cover some 500 goods and commodities.
