Risk and reward to early season lambing

There’s risk and reward to early season lambing and kidding.

Clay Elliott with Purina Animal Nutrition says sheep and goat producers are looking for more time for growth until weaning.

“So we can increase growth while we also increase our weaning weights. And then if we’re selling them at weaning, it in turn will generate more income.”

He tells Brownfield the tradeoff to lambing in the winter is dealing with the weather.

“It makes it harder for the farmers to get out and get them fed and taken care of. And then if they do have them inside barns, bedding, keeping them dry, and ventilation is critical as they close those buildings up.”

Elliott believes nutrition is also critical and says feeding a quality mineral can help get babies on the ground with fewer issues.
