Kumba appoints Terence Goodlace as board chair

Veteran mining executive Terence Goodlace has been appointed chairperson of the Kumba Iron Ore board, replacing Mandla Gantsho who retired May, the company said on Thursday.

Goodlace assumed the role on 23 June.

"As a widely respected leader in the South African mining industry, his demonstrable commitment to health, safety, operational excellence and innovation adds to the quality of our board discussions," CEO Themba Mkhwanazi said.

Goodlance is not new to Kumba, as he was appointed to the board in March 2017 and has served as a lead independent director and chaired various committees, including the Strategy and Investment Committee. With a mining career spanning 40 years, the company noted his extensive experience in leading underground and open-pit mining operations in Africa, South America and Australia.

In 2012, he joined Impala Platinum as CEO and also served on its board of directors for more than six years. Prior to heading Impala, Goodlace served as Golf Fields chief operating officer from 2008.

Commenting on his new appointment, he said Kumba was uniquely positioned to continue producing premium products for its global customers while delivering sustainable value for all its stakeholders.

Goodlace currently serves as an independent non-executive director on the boards of Gold Fields, AfriTin Mining, and is the chairperson of Southern Palladium.
