Someone stole more than $350K worth of jewelry from Trump Tower — and police think it was an inside job
The president still has a penthouse suite in the building
An unknown thief made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry from two apartments in New York City's Trump Tower. Police officials reported that they think it's an inside job.
What happened?
Two residents of President Donald Trump's namesake tower in New York City were robbed. The first had been away from her home from June 21 to Sept. 9 and came home to find five pieces of jewelry worth $236,000 missing. These included a a Harry Winston diamond bracelet, diamond and emerald earrings, and a bracelet, ring, and necklace that contained both diamonds and sapphires.
The second resident had been gone between Sept. 4 and Sept. 10 and reported that her $117,000 Graff diamond bracelet had been taken.
In both cases the victims were away from home but there was no sign of forced entry. Investigators believe that the thefts may be an inside job.
"It's not somebody breaking into the building or roaming the halls, trying the doors until they find one that's open," a law enforcement source told the New York Post.
The Post also reported that police did not suspect that the two victims were attempting to commit insurance fraud.
Trump stayed at Trump Tower on Sunday night so that he could attend the United Nations General Assembly on Monday and is expected to also stay there Monday night. The Times reported that when the thefts took place, security at the skyscraper had already been increased in anticipation of Trump's visit weeks later.
So far, nobody has been arrested. According to the Times, a police spokesman said that police are looking into anyone who may have had access to Trump Tower. The investigation is ongoing. When the thief or thieves are found, they are likely to be charged with grand larceny.
