Operation ‘close illegal mining’ gets underway, Burgersfort

The fight against illegal mining was taken to the next level when three managers/owners of Klipham Mine aged between 47 and 60 were arrested on 19 January 2018 in the afternoon for operating an illegal mine.

The arrests were affected during Operation “Close Illegal Mining” that was led by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Detective Services, Major General Bafana Linda.

Klipham mine which is situated next to Marula Mine at Madikana Village outside Burgersfort has been operating with an alleged fraudulent license for some time.

The meticulous investigations conducted by members of the Organized Crime Unit led to these arrests and subsequent confiscation of mining machinery worth millions of rand.

This provincial operation was conducted by members from the Public Order Police, Provincial Detectives, the Air wing, Organized Crime, Local Criminal Record Centre, Visible Policing and officials from the DMR (Department of Mineral Resources).

The following were confiscated:

Scania trucks horse and trailers, 2× Bell trucks, 2× Compressor generator, 4× Front end loader, 2× Excavators, 2× Tata Trucks, 1× Dissel Tank, 1×Laptop and printer.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended all the members involved for their sterling performance in ridding this province of any act of illegal mining.
