Miners for Cancer buy clinic biopsy scope

On Dec. 1, at the seventh annual Miners for Cancer Christmas Gala presented by Vale, Wayne Tonelli, president and co-founder of Miners for Cancer, announced on behalf of his team a $30,000 donation to the Northeast Cancer Centre.

As a result, $22,600 will be going towards a new clinic biopsy scope.

"This will lead to quicker service for patients here in Sudbury," Tonelli said at the event. "With this scope -- there will be no need to wait to book operating room time. This new scope will not only mean patients are getting treated quicker, it will also reduce adverse outcomes from current biopsies being performed without visual optimization."

The remaining money will be put towards the final touches on the chemotherapy suites renovations Miners for Cancer paid for from last year's gala proceeds.

"This money will complete the chemo suite renovations and make the atmosphere more welcoming and comfortable for patients receiving treatment here in Sudbury," added Tonelli.

Tannys Laughren, director of the Northern Cancer Foundation, took to the podium at the event to share her gratitude.

"The Northern Cancer Foundation is extremely grateful for the ongoing support from Miners for Cancer," Laughren said.

"This support is making a difference in the cancer outcomes and experiences for all of our patients. The staff, board, and especially the patients of the Northeast Cancer Centre say thank you."

Since its inception, Miners for Cancer -- a local charitable group made up solely of volunteers -- has raised more than $1 million for vital cancer patient care, equipment and research at Sudbury's very own Northeast Cancer Centre.
