4energia eyes expanding wind park in west Lithuania

4energia, a company owned by Estonia's Nelja Energia that already operates five wind mill parks in Lithuania, plans new investments and intends to build a new park of up to 40 megawatts (MW) in the Silute district, western Lithuania, informs LETA/BNS.

The project will require a permit from the Defense Ministry, which should conclude whether the park will not affect the radar systems on the Lithuanian border with the Russian Kaliningrad region. Furthermore, the parliament is yet to approve the new energy strategy that would pave way for wind energy development.

4energia CEO Tadas Navickas says the builders were expecting the government's decision in connection to further development of the sector.

"The new project of the national energy strategy envisages development of wind energy – additional 200-300 MW are projected by 2020 (…). In this light, we are readying for the planned expansion. We expect that in the future wind energy will be competitive in terms of the market price, and the development will be even faster," Navickas told BNS.

The Energy Ministry has pledged an additional quota of 250 MW to wind power plants by 2020. Currently, wind utilities in Lithuania have already reached the 500 MW quota stipulated by law.

Navickas said the new wind mills in the Silute district would appear after 2020.

In his words, the project would expand the 60 MW park completed in the Silute district last year. With investment of 100 million euros, the park generates an annual 220 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy.

Investment in the new park could be 40-50 million euros. According to calculations by BNS, it would generate around 150 GWh of energy per year.

In Navickas' words, 4energia operates five wind mill parks in Lithuania, including three of them in the Silute district.
