Passenger tries to smuggle gold with rhodium coating

Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit intercepted the passenger at the exit gate of the arrival hall of the airport.

KOCHI: Customs officials at the Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery seized rhodium-coated gold wires weighing 709.5 gm from a passenger who arrived by an Indigo flight on Monday.

Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit intercepted the passenger at the exit gate of the arrival hall of the airport. He had concealed the rhodium-coated gold wires as the metal beading of his trolley bag which had checked in as cabin baggage. The gold is valued at Rs 21 lakh, said Biju Thomas, deputy commissioner of Customs.

The passenger has been arrested and an investigation is under way.
